Mölndal 22 october – Surface defines function

How a component performs in practice is determined not only by its shape and material, but also by its surface. In contact, motion, friction, sealing and wear, surface texture is a crucial part of the function. The course Function Begins in the Surface is an advanced training course focused on how surface texture governs functional properties and how international standards are used to formulate the right, verifiable and robust requirements. The course is delivered by RISE in collaboration with Toponova and in cooperation with SIS. This is step 3 in the 2026 course series on surface texture.

The course focuses on moving beyond traditional parameters and instead working from how the surface functions in its application. RISE describes the course as practical and modern, with real examples, ISO-based methods and clear working approaches. The course also requires certain prior knowledge.

Purpose and background

This training course is intended for those who want to understand how surface texture is used as a functional tool in product development, specification and verification. The emphasis is on the relationship between surface texture, function, performance and service life, and on how current standards can be used to translate functional requirements into verifiable requirements.

The course covers how designers and researchers analyse surfaces based on functional requirements, how filters are used to isolate relevant surface texture, and how parameters are selected based on function rather than habit. It also addresses how surface texture is used to compare and understand different surfaces, and how requirements can be transferred to drawings in accordance with ISO GPS.

During the day, the following will be covered, among other things:

  • the relationship between surface texture, function, performance and service life
  • how designers and researchers analyse surfaces based on functional requirements
  • the use of filters to isolate relevant surface texture according to ISO 16610
  • the selection of surface texture parameters based on function rather than habit, according to ISO 21920-2 and ISO 25178-2
  • how surface texture is used to compare and understand different surfaces
  • translating functional requirements into drawing requirements
  • how filters and parameters are used to create verifiable requirements according to ISO GPS

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at design engineers and product developers, manufacturing and process engineers, quality engineers and specialists in measurement technology/metrology, as well as researchers, engineers and technicians in tribology, materials and functional surfaces.

Course leader

The course speakers are Johan Fast Berglund, Researcher at RISE AB, and Stefan Rosén, Manager at Toponova.

Why participate?

The course provides an advanced review of how surface texture is linked to function in practice. For those who want to work more consciously with functional requirements, tolerancing and verifiable requirements according to ISO GPS, this is the third step in the 2026 course series on surface texture.
