Borås June 2 – Surface under control, step 1 in the course series on surface structure at RISE

Surface texture plays a central role in how a component performs in practice. It affects not only the surface itself, but can also have a significant impact on factors such as wear, friction, sealing and service life. Despite this, surface texture requirements still often create uncertainty in design, manufacturing and inspection.

The course Surface under control will be held at RISE in Borås on June 2, 2026. The course is conducted by RISE in collaboration with Toponova and is the first step in a course series on surface structure during 2026. The focus is on giving participants a clear basic understanding of how surface structure is described, assessed and communicated according to ISO GPS.

This training is suitable for anyone who wants a better grasp of the concepts, standards and relationships behind modern surface texture requirements — and who wants to apply that knowledge more confidently in practice.

Purpose and background

This training course has been developed as a basic course to give participants structure, terminology and context for surface texture according to ISO GPS. The emphasis is on building an understanding of how surface texture is described, how it is linked to standards, and how it can be handled in technical documentation and measurement.

The course covers both profile and areal surface texture and introduces the standards and concepts highlighted by RISE in the course description. It combines theoretical review with practical elements related to measurement and interpretation of results.

During the day, the following will be covered, among other things:

  • what surface texture is and why it is crucial for function and quality
  • the difference between form and surface texture
  • how surface texture arises in manufacturing processes
  • an introduction to ISO GPS and the place of surface texture within the GPS system
  • profile and areal surface texture, with an overview of ISO 21920, ISO 25178 and ISO 1302
  • basic concepts such as profiles, areas, wavelength, filters and parameters
  • how surface texture is communicated in drawings and technical documentation
  • practical measurement of surface texture and interpretation of measurement results according to ISO 4288, 21920-3 and 25178-3

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at designers, production planners, manufacturing technicians, quality technicians and measurement technicians. It is therefore suitable for people working with specification, manufacturing, inspection or follow-up where surface texture is a relevant part of the work.

Course leader

The course speakers are Helena Björk, Project Manager at RISE AB, and Stefan Rosén, Manager at Toponova.
