As tolerances become tighter and demands on surface functionality increase, measuring alone is no longer enough. It also becomes crucial to understand how the measurement was carried out, what the result actually shows, and when a value can be considered reliable. The course Ytprecision är ingen slump is an advanced course in surface measurement, calibration and measurement uncertainty, delivered by RISE in collaboration with Toponova as step 2 in the 2026 course series on surface texture.
The course takes a holistic approach to surface texture measurement in accordance with the latest ISO standards. The focus is on modern profile and areal standards such as ISO 21920, ISO 25178 and ISO 1302, together with key concepts such as profiles, filters, wavelengths and parameters. Through practical measurement sessions and interpretation of real measurement data, the course highlights the interaction between measurement method, calibration and uncertainty budgets.
Purpose and background
This training is an advanced course for those who want to move beyond the measured value itself and understand the metrological properties that determine whether a result is reliable. The emphasis is on building an understanding of how surface texture measurement should be assessed according to current standards, and how calibration and measurement uncertainty affect the result.
The course covers both profile and areal surface texture and reviews the standards and concepts highlighted by RISE in the course description. It combines theory with practical elements related to measurement, interpretation of results, and assessment of whether the measurement data provides a sufficiently reliable basis for decision-making.
During the day, the following will be covered, among other things:
- surface texture measurement according to the latest ISO standards
- metrological properties that affect whether a result is reliable
- the relationship between measurement method, calibration and uncertainty budgets
- profile and areal standards such as ISO 21920, ISO 25178 and ISO 1302
- key concepts such as profiles, filters, wavelengths and parameters
- practical measurement sessions
- interpretation of real measurement data
Who is the course for?
The course is aimed at designers, production planners, manufacturing technicians, quality technicians and measurement technicians. It is therefore suitable for people working with specification, manufacturing, inspection or follow-up where surface texture is a relevant part of the work.
Course leader
The course speakers are Helena Björk, Project Manager at RISE AB, and Stefan Rosén, Manager at Toponova.

Why participate?
The course provides an in-depth understanding of surface texture measurement, with a focus on how measurement method, calibration and measurement uncertainty affect the result. For those who want to understand more than the numbers on the display and gain a stronger basis for decisions in quality work, verification and development projects, this is the next step in the 2026 course series on surface texture.
