Surface texture is an important part of geometric product specifications and affects properties such as friction, wear, corrosion, light reflection, lubrication, and aesthetics. To clearly specify and verify surface texture, one must understand how surface textures are defined and verified according to ISO GPS.
ARIADNE Engineering offers the “Introductory Course in Surface Texture,” a one-day course that provides participants with an understanding of how the latest ISO GPS tools are used to define and verify surface textures based on functional requirements.
The course will be held on November 24 at ARIADNE Engineerings office in Västerås and is carried out in collaboration with Toponova.
Purpose and background
The course focuses on how surface texture can be specified and inspected in accordance with ISO GPS. Participants will receive an overview of how surface texture is defined and verified, based on both profile-based and area-based surface texture.
The course covers, among other things, the differences between older and newer standards for surface texture, with Ariadne specifically mentioning:
- ISO 1302, an older surface finish standard for profiles
- ISO 21920, a new standard for surface profile
- ISO 25178, standard for areal/3D surface texture
During the day, the following will be covered, among other things:
- Surface finish as a critical factor for many products
- ISO GPS and its toolkit for specifying and verifying surface texture
- Profile-based and area-based/3D surface structure
- Classification of Geometric Deviations and Surface Texture
- Symbols and Notations on Drawings
- Surface texture parameters for profile and area/3D
- Measurement and Verification of Surface Texture
Who is the course for?
The course is intended for technical professionals working in design, production, and quality, such as:
- Constructors
- Production Engineers
- Quality Engineers
The prerequisite is completion of the ISO GPS introductory course at ARIADNE or an equivalent course.

Why participate?
Surface texture plays a major role in how a product performs in practice. By understanding how surface texture is specified, measured, and verified according to ISO GPS, it becomes easier to communicate requirements clearly and consistently across design, production, and quality control.
This course provides a basic understanding of surface structure and how current ISO GPS tools are used to define and control the surface properties of products.
Program
The course is a one-day course and covers surface texture, ISO GPS, relevant standards, symbols, parameters, and the measurement and verification of surface texture.
